UGANDA MOUNTAINEERING SAFARIS

Uganda is a unique safari destination to hikers who are interested in climbing and trekking over small hills, medium sized and high mountains. The snow capped Rwenzoris, famed in ancient times as the mountains of the moon, running along the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, have now been developed and opened to travelers interested in climbing not only the tallest ranges of Africa but also of the world as well. The Rwenzoris offer some exceptional walking to both trekkers at lower altitudes as well as mountaineers who would like to meet the challenge of ascending to the glacial peaks of over 5100 metres.

 

In the eastern part o the country Mt. Elgon with its caldera is quite another popular destination for medium and high climbers. It is actually a heavily forested ancient volcano with its base covering an area of more than 3000sq km. Though the mountain straddles at the Kenyan border, its peak (Wagagai peak) is found on the Ugandan side. This presents a wonderful mountaineering experience to tourists who are ever interested in attempting to the highest peak.

  • ELGON MOUNTAINEERING TOUR -10 DAYS

    • This 10 days trip takes you to Mount Elgon, an extinct volcano with the largest surface area in the world (50 km by 80km) and a caldera which covers over 40km at the top of the mountain. The highest peak is Wagagai, 4.321 m. It lies at the border with Kenya in Eastern Uganda. Mountain Elgon is the fourth highest in East Africa however it is not difficult to climb and one does not need special equipment to hike it. The Mountain is not so high and so there is no risk of high altitude related sicknesses as associated with the other mountains.

  • RWENZORI MOUNTAINEERING TOUR- 10 DAYS

    • This 10 days safari takes you to the Rwenzori Mountains popularly known and described by Greek Astronomer Ptolemy in AD 150 as the Mountains of the Moon. The Rwenzoris have six peaks with Margherita-5109m being the highest peak on Mount Stanley. It is Africa’s highest range, rivaled only in altitude by the lone Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro. Ardent hikers who have tried out other Mountains say the Rwenzoris are the most daring in Africa. The trekking adventure will pass you through rainforest with monkeys and birds, bamboo forest, before leading to the high-altitude moorland zone, a landscape of strange giant lobelias, dwarfed by black rock and snow. Different large mammals exist in the lower slopes, but the Rwenzoris are favoured more for their awesome scenery and changing vegetation.
